Here's my take: Slapping a "neo" onto words like liberal and conservative challenges us when for decades we've been using those words as shorthand. I think that Naomi Kline is a big thinker who may (or may not) understand 20th century economic theory (I sure don't) and is trying to make the myriad economic and political changes of the last 60 years or so accessible to Everyman and Everywoman. Here's another take on the N word:

Not to be confused with the political liberalism of John Stuart Mill, neoliberalism is characterized by investigative reporter Naomi Klein as a "holy trinity" -- privatization, deregulation and cuts to social spending -- in which governments dismantle trade barriers, abandon public ownership, reduce taxes, eliminate the minimum wage, cut health and welfare spending, and privatize education. She calls the means of achieving this goal "disaster capitalism" and describes how it has resulted in a worldwide redistribution of income and wealth to the already rich at the expense of economic solvency for the middle and lower classes. (From: http://www.naomiklein.org/reviews/ms-magazine-review-shock-doctrine)

Good luck in figuring it all out. Kline's books are big fat tomes that I've tried to read but find myself setting aside because they make my brain hurt.

I should clarify our current funding situation. Tax-exempt organizations are in the news, and the exempt status of GreenSTEMs (DBA Club125) is typical; we are waiting to hear back from the IRS. But until then, like many non-profit startups, we are able to receive tax-exempt donations via a third party fiscal sponsor.

Our sponsor is School Factory Inc, who support many educational activity centers across the country. Cash, check, or in-kind donations of over $250 will receive a receipt from School Factory for tax reporting purposes. A new paypal donation button will be available online soon.

Hi, thanks for the nice article!

The science project out front was a high school robotics club, Team Illusion (http://www.teamillusion4464.com/), which is from our Greenbelt/Lanham area. GreenSTEMs solicited a grant to get them started and this was their rookie year. The team consists of students from several schools, and homeschool families. They won the "rookie all-star" award at the DC regional competition which earned them a ticket to the national championships! For next year, we are helping the team continue to raise funds, and to locate a new home for their workshop; the Club125 space isn't big enough. If anyone has workshop space available, let us know!

The cool feature of the train layout, courtesy of Meade Area Railroad Society (http://www.marrsweb.org/), was a camera mounted on the train that showed the train's view on a display monitor. We're inviting railroad fans to use the club to build and decorate small 2x4ft modules, learning skills from experienced modelers. Our 3D printer should be a neat tool to use.

The gentleman seated next to Richard Bates is his father, James Bates. Jim's first club project is to bring in one of his home built computers for fault analysis and repair.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Some of my favorites: abelia mossanensis, hydrangea macrophylla and paniculata, spirea thunbergii and van hout, clethra alnifolia ruby spice and clethra tomentosa, rhododendron canescens, calycanthus Athens, Hartlage Wine, Venus (Hartlage wine may be the best),vitex, camellias, viburnum plicatum, viburnum wentworth, forsythia kumsum (variegated leaf). spireas are good for a tight spot or next to a sidewalk because they can be pruned back as needed without destroying their looks. I made the mistake of putting a viburnum plicatum too near a sidewalk and their looks can be damaged by pruning to keep in bounds (they need to be pruned but more to keep them from crossing branches and for suckering). clethras are also good next to sidewalks. I think calycanthus look good mixed in with other things - they are sort of rangy shrubs. I have two clematis climbing up my vitex which is fun.

So great! I would note, though, that the Greenbelt Theatre's cause was supported by a much wider audience than the town itself. Many folks spread the word via community listservs and their own personal network of friends, family and acquaintances. Congrats to Greenbelt and thanks to everyone far and wide that helped the cause!
